At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
